Grant Fowler, MD, FAAFP




Grant C. Fowler, MD, is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Texas Christian University/ University of North Texas Medical School in Fort Worth, Texas. He is also Chair of Family and Community Medicine and Chief of the Primary Care Service line at John Peter Smith (Tarrant County) Hospital. Dr. Fowler is a National Merit Scholar graduate of Rice University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Upon receiving his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Houston McGovern Medical School, he completed his residency at Memorial Family Practice in Houston. After almost eight years as Director of the UT Houston McGovern Family Medicine Residency, Dr. Fowler was Vice Chair for 19 years. Dr. Fowler has served as an invited lecturer at multiple regional and national meetings as well as at multiple institutions. Author or co-author of over 80 articles, book chapters, and monographs, he has also served as an editor for several professional publications. Recently, as co-editor, he helped revise the best-selling textbook from Mosby/ Saunders/ Elsevier, Procedures for Primary Care. He is also in the process of completing another textbook, 20 Common Problems in Cardiology for Primary Care. Previously a member of the Board of Advisors of the Harris County Academy of Family Physicians, he completed multiple terms on the Board of Directors of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians and two elected terms on the Board of Directors of the national Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors. Dr. Fowler has also served on the Executive Board of the Harris County Medical Society and was elected Chair of their Ethics Committee. His current research and teaching interests focus on Preventative Medicine including depression, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and office procedures. He also has interests in Geriatrics and Primary Care Sports Medicine and has a Certificate of Added Qualifications in both and is board certified in Lipidology. Dr. Fowler was a recipient of the UT Houston McGovern Medical School's Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award every year since it's inception until he left that institution.
