Emergency Procedures

A Seminar for Medical Emergency Training

CME Conference Description:

The number of patients utilizing emergency rooms and other acute care facilities is rising dramatically.  Many health care providers who now staff these facilities lack confidence in the emergency procedures central to this role. Some come from training backgrounds that do not emphasize procedural competence.  Others perform procedures infrequently or find it difficult, in their current practices, to stay current on evidence based techniques.  This CME medical conference is designed for anyone who needs the skills to care for patients in emergency situations. A comprehensive review of airway management, emergency lung and vascular-related procedures, neurology, and wound repair skills is addressed.  The content is presented in the context of most recent evidence based guidelines. Pig cadavers, anatomically correct manikins and point of care ultrasound are used to practice techniques learned.  Also practical tips to avoid common pitfalls and improve efficiency and safety are discussed.

The following procedures are reviewed in detail:  Airway Management (noninvasive ventilation, intermediate airway insertion, endotracheal intubation, and needle and surgical cricothyroidotomy); Vascular Access (multilumen and cordis central venous catheter insertion, ultrasound guided peripheral and central vascular access and intraosseous access for children and adults); Thoracentesis and chest tube placement (large and small bore); Paracentesis; Lumbar Puncture; Simple and complicated wound repair.

Additional topics include procedural sedation and initial ventilator management.
