Hospitalist Procedures

A Seminar for Medical Hospitalist Training

CME Conference Description:

Hospitalist programs are quickely emerging as a dominant model for inpatient care in the United States. At present, there are in excess of 30,000 physicians whose primary clinical focus is inpatient care, and this workforce continues to grow at an astounding pace. These providers come from backgrounds as diverse as family medicine, general internal medicine, anesthesiology and pediatrics.

Procedures commonly performed by hospitalists in this patient population may not have been the focus of providers coming from predominantly outpatient practices. Physicians still engaged in traditional outpatient/inpatient practices may encounter some inpatient procedures infrequently. In addition, practicing hospitalists may encounter procedures common to hospital medicine yet less common to their own practice background. Lastly, the increasing trend of integrating physician assistants and nurse practitioners into hospitalist practices requires supervising physicians be well-versed in the procedures these providers may assist with as well as perform. Given the diversity of PA and NP training and experiences, this course will be an excellent review for these practitioners as well.

The following procedures will be reviewed in detail: Multilumen and Cordis central venous catheter insertion and rewiring including internal jugular, subclavian, and femoral approaches; thoracentesis and chest tube placement – both large and small bore; paracentesis; lumbar puncture; arterial line placement; bone marrow aspiration and biopsy – posterior iliac approach. In addition, the CME medical conference will cover conventional mechanical ventilation, noninvasive ventilation, pulmonary artery catheter placement and uses, procedural sedation and airway management (endotracheal intubation and intermediate airway insertion). This course will also cover the use of vascular and non-vascular ultrasound to assist with inpatient procedures.

The information provided will be presented within the context of the most recent, evidence-based literature relevant to the discussion at hand. Pig cadavers will be used to practice various techniques.
