John B. Pope, MD

 

Dr. Pope received his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical Center, Shreveport, LA, and continued there for residency, serving as chief resident in Family Medicine. He remains at the University Health Sciences Center as a Professor of Clinical Family Medicine, and is Procedures Program Coordinator there. He has studied and written extensively on endoscopic procedures, including book chapters on colonoscopy and common gastrointestinal diseases, and journal articles on colorectal cancer screening and endoscopy quality issues. He has performed or supervised over 3500 gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures, and continues to perform around 250 procedures a year. He receives referrals for colonoscopy from multiple departments within the University as well as from private practice physicians in the community. He has taught over 50 colonoscopy courses nationwide involving over 1000 physicians (family medicine, internal medicine, surgery). He serves as an AAFP representative to the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable of the American Cancer Society as well as serving on the Competencies and Standards Taskgroup of that body. He recently completed NCI-funded research in the area of chemoprophylaxsis of colorectal polyps.
