Society for Teachers of Family Medicine
Excellence in Education Award

The STFM Excellence in Education Award is presented to a member of STFM who has demonstrated personal excellence in family medicine education in support of teaching, curriculum development, research, or other aspects of medical student or resident education.

The 2005 Excellence in Education Award winner, John Pfenninger, MD, is president and director of The National Procedures Institute (NPI). In presenting the award, STFM stated "The NPI has grown into a trusted institution for procedural training for many specialties, but especially family physicians, in the United States and around the world. Dr Pfenninger has written many articles, book chapters, and book reviews, but his major written contribution is Pfenninger and Fowler's Procedures for Primary Care, compiled with Grant Fowler, MD, which is now in its second edition. This 2,100 page text of primary care procedures has become the “bible” for teaching procedures in many family medicine residency programs and numerous other settings. His research led to the development of a novel treatment for the common wart that is now considered a first choice among dermatologists. Dr Pfenninger has recorded numerous patient education videotapes and has served as a medical reviewer for several family medicine journals, including Family Medicine."
