Headache Procedures - Where There Are No Headache Doctors: Providing 21st Century Care in the Community Course Description

This course will provide an evidence based approach to the diagnosis, management and prevention of headache and migraine. It will include preamble on pain, identifying headache – the epidemiology and its application, “It’s Not a Tumor” – secondary headaches, what is migraine – pathophysiology, acute migraine treatment, preventive migraine treatment, in-clinic rescue migraine treatment, migraine staging – coordinating acute, preventive, and rescue plans, migraine comorbidities – identifying and addressing barriers to improvements, and procedures for migraine. Specific procedures for migraine treatment and prophylaxis will be practiced and demonstrated.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this activity, the participant should be better able to:
  • Increase awareness and interest of headaches in primary care.
  • Provide a clinical framework for the diagnosis, prophylaxis, and treatment of migraine.
  • Discuss the distinction between primary and secondary headaches.
  • Discuss the difference between tension, migraine, and cluster headaches.
  • Identify risk factors for migraine progression.
  • Develop a plan for headache treatment based upon migraine staging.
  • Perform therapeutic injections for the prevention and treatment of migraine headaches.
