Geriatrics: Beyond the Medicare Wellness Visit Course Description

With health system reform, Medicare pays for a Welcome to Medicare Visit and a Wellness Visit every 12 months. This visit looks at safety issues, medication usage, risk and history of falls, cognitive issues, screening for depression, and laying out a plan for screening preventive services. This course attempts to give physicians the tools to do this type of visit and education on how to approach problems identified with the visit.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants should be better able to:

  • Discuss the ‘Welcome to Medicare’ physical visit.
  • Determine screening recommendations for your geriatric patients.
  • Discuss how the presentation of an acute illness is modified in older patients.
  • Identify if what is taken as "normal" in the elderly can be treatable or a preventable illness.
  • Review commonly used medications that should be avoided in the elderly.
  • Implement different approaches for prescribing in the elderly.
  • Recognize the importance of falls and discuss the risk factors for falls.
  • Appropriately evaluate patients who have a history of falls.
  • Diagnose and treat depression in the elderly.
